and welcome to our new members!
Hi all,
Hope that this Tuesday finds you as centered as possible. Words that fortified today included Hala Alyan’s thoughts Our Steadfastness Will Outlast Our Destruction, in which she defines the concept of psychic numbing and strategies to defy the impulse to shut down and look away in the face of abject violence. “It is easy to focus on the sense of powerlessness,” she writes, “the inconceivable loss, the vetoes, the complicity. It might feel cognitively harder to recognize our collective power, to remember the impact of small actions: they dismantle powerful narratives, seed curiosity, mount political pressure.” Our aim here with this virtual book club is to seed curiosity in the face of the inhumane, the brute oppression and punishment. What is possible when we commit, learn, deepen, connect?
We hope you’ve been able to get a copy of Letters to Palestine by now, and we’ll write you soon with focus passages to be prepared for our virtual meet up. If you can join us on Wednesday, January 24th at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT, please register for the Zoom here. As a reminder, we call in API folks and welcome all people of color to our convenings; we encourage white folks to read along and organize their own space to reflect and discuss. Depending on the # of people we will split into breakout groups to foster relationship building and dialogue.
Apologies to the new folks that signed up and got an auto-reply that was outdated, and thanks to the new member that gave us a heads up! A reminder that everyone is welcome to sign up for this Substack, and anyone who wants to participate should sign up, so feel free to forward this to folks you’d like to invite in.
In solidarity,
