Hi everyone!
We’re excited to be starting APIs4Abolition again as a continued space of learning, dialogue, connection and commitment to envision and realize a future without prisons or police.
Moving forward, we will host two convenings every month centered around readings to deepen and enrich our understanding of abolition.
APIs4Abolition Drop-Ins will be a monthly meeting centered around 1-2 texts (articles, podcasts, video clips, etc) to ground and direct our conversation. This is a great place for folks to join in who have questions, are curious, and interested in connecting with others around abolitionist practice. If you feel full up with commitments but want to share space in learning and conversation, this is the space for you. All are welcome.
APIs4Abolition Book Club will be a monthly meeting centered around a long-form text. Participants will commit to reading the book and, depending on the length of the book, we’ll meet half-way through or at the completion of the book. If you’ve been wanting to dig into or re-read foundational abolitionist texts in community, this is the space for you! Our first book will be Golden Gulag, written by leading abolitionist thinker and geographer Ruth Wilson Gilmore. We’ll plan to begin reading Golden Gulag the week of February 21st, and have our first convening the week of March 14.
Interested in joining one or both of our convenings? Great! Click here to signal your interest, help us pick a day of the week, and contribute any ideas you may have for texts we should read!
Finally, anyone is welcome to drop in and fire up the Discord, an open format space. If you are interested in potentially moderating or leading the Discord, please let us know.
Please feel free to spread the word and forward this email to folks you think would want to join. This e-mail list is 170 strong and we’re excited about the potential of our collective learning and connections. While we are Asian and Pacific Islander-identified people, we welcome other people of color to join our learning community. We ask that white folks self-organize and do not participate in our programming.
Thank you and we hope to see you virtually soon! In solidarity <3
